Sun Valley Man Charged with Felony DUI

A man was charged with felony DUI in Sun Valley last week. The man was identified by the authorities as Douglas Fowler King, 63, of Sun Valley. King was due to appear in a court on Wednesday, October 21.

According to the details shared by the Sun Valley Police Department, King was traveling along the Elkhorn Road when an officer with the department suspected erratic driving. King was driving with high beams on while traveling towards a police vehicle, which is considered a traffic violation. He was also driving above the designated limit, making 37mph in a 25mph zone.

Based on these signs, SVPD officer Steven Whiting decided to stop King’s vehicle. He began pursuing the vehicle. While traveling on the Elkhorn Road, King failed to pause at a stop sign at the Dollar Road. This was when Whiting conducted a traffic stop on King’s vehicle. The vehicle was identified as a Volvo.

Whiting suspected that King was driving under the influence of alcohol. So he asked King to undergo field sobriety tests. When King failed the tests, he was taken into custody by the officer.

According to the arrest affidavit provided by Officer Whiting, King became aggressive during the arrest. He yelled at Whiting and became agitated. After Whiting had transported King to the police station, he continued to display signs of aggression. While at the station, he spit chewing gum at an officer’s forehead. He also tossed his shoes at two police officers.

Based on this, SVPD charged King with two misdemeanors of battery upon law officers as well as a single count of felony DUI. This isn’t the first time King has been charged with DUI. His two prior convictions date from 2016 and 2001. A hearing for the case is due on Wednesday, October 21. It is at the hearing that a judge will decide whether a felony DUI charge is supported by the available evidence.
