Man Accused of Causing Crash, Charged with Stalking, Assault

An Idaho man was arrested last month after he allegedly attempted to run a woman off the road. He is 35-year-old Jared James Keating and the unnamed victim had previously filed a civil protection order against him.

According to the probable cause affidavit, the victim told Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office deputies that she had stopped to get gas when the ordeal began.

She said the incident occurred at the intersection of South Ammon Road and East Sunnyside Road just after midnight. Keating allegedly pulled up in an orange car and started yelling at her and the man she was with.

The woman said she drove off but Keating followed her and side-swiped her vehicle. She said he subsequently tried to pull in front of her and stop her from driving forward. He then reportedly hit the front of the car while she was reversing and then took off.

Police said the victim indicated that she didn’t want Keating to be arrested or charged. The man who was with her declined to speak to the deputy, only saying that he was concerned about his criminal history.

Meanwhile, deputies went to Keating’s residence and they spotted an orange vehicle in his garage. According to the affidavit, no one answered the door, but deputies heard someone go upstairs.

The woman contacted deputies later and said Keating had threatened her and she had several text messages and recordings of phone calls as evidence.

In one of the calls, he reportedly told the woman he should have killed her. Keating was arrested and charged with first-degree stalking and aggravated assault. Each charge carried a maximum prison sentence of five years.

Keating also faces charges of failing to stop for an accident and violating a protection order. Both are punishable by up to a year in jail. His bond was set at $15,000.
