Motorcyclists Hit, Injured in Hit-and-Run by DUI Driver

Two motorcyclists sustained injuries in a crash caused by a DUI driver on Sunday, August 30. The incident took place close to Rathdrum on the State Highway 41.

According to the details shared by the Idaho State Police, the motorcyclists were riding together on a motorcycle when they were hit by the DUI driver. The motorcyclists were traveling southbound on the Highway 41 when the collision occurred.

The other vehicle involved in the incident was identified as a Subaru Outback. The driver of the Outback was turning west onto the Village Boulevard when he failed to yield to the southbound traffic. This was when his vehicle came into the path of the motorcyclists who collided into the passenger side of the Subaru.

The driver of the Subaru was identified as Kearen R. Young, 50, of Honolulu. Following the collision, Young fled the scene of the accident. ISP was later able to locate him and his vehicle, taking him into custody.

The motorcyclists were identified by ISP as Albert G. Galli aged 73 and Amy L. Galli aged 49, both of Post Falls. Both motorcyclists were wearing helmets and were ejected from the motorcycle following the crash. They sustained injuries and once the first responders reached the site of the incident, both were transported via ambulance to the Kootenai Health. The nature and extent of their injuries is not known at this time.

ISP later charged Young with two counts of aggravated DUI and one count of leaving the scene of an injury crash. The penalties for leaving the site of injury crash in Idaho include a prison sentence of up to 5 years and a fine of up to $5,000. Penalties for aggravated DUI are stiffer including a prison sentence of up to 15 years and a fine of up to $5,000.
