The Idaho State Patrol said 127 drivers were arrested for DUI in Idaho over the course of a few days during the holiday season. These arrests took place between December 18 and January 3.
The ISP, in collaboration with the local police department and county authorities, had ramped up DUI patrols during the holiday season. This was done as a part of the effort to clear the roads of drivers who were driving under the influence. The decision had been made in light of the fact that a lot of drunk drivers typically drive on the roads during the holidays.
According to the details shared by the ISP, the bulk of the DUI arrests were made on four days from Friday, December 31 to Sunday, January 3. In all, 52 drivers were arrested for DUI in Idaho during this four-day period. Many of the arrests were made after ISP received calls from other drivers who witnessed reckless or erratic driving.
Legally, the law enforcement agencies need sufficient evidence to stop a driver and inspect them for being possibly drunk. Reports from witnesses are one type of evidence that is used to identify and then apprehend such drivers.
Idaho sees a large number of DUI accidents every year. Many of these accidents result in serious injuries and deaths. The state has also seen an increase in DUI fatalities year-over-year. In 2019, there was a 27% increase in the number of DUI fatalities across Idaho. The total number of DUI fatalities across the county was reported as 10,511 during 2018.
A spokesperson with the ISP stated that the recent drive by the troopers was meant to remove drunk drivers from state roads before they could hurt others on the road. Thanks to the drive, the troopers were successful in taking more than a 100 such drivers off the roads.
