DUI Driver Charged with Felony Offense in Nez Perce County

A DUI driver has been charged with felony DUI as well as other offenses in the Nez Perce County. The charges were brought against the driver after a state trooper witnessed him driving erratically on the road.

According to the details shared by the authorities, the driver has been identified as Dewey R. Campbell, 38, of Lewiston. Campbell was driving on the Webb Road at the time of his DUI arrest.

According to Dimitriy Lutsyk, a trooper with the Idaho State Police, he was traveling on the Webb Road in response to an agency assist call when he saw Campbell’s vehicle. It was a Chevrolet pickup traveling westbound on the road. Lutsyk saw the vehicle traveling erratically with the driver veering out of his lane several times. Lutsyk decided to pursue and apprehend the driver.

As he turned around to follow the pickup, he saw that it had stopped in the middle of the eastbound lane. A passenger stepped out of the vehicle and tried to load furniture into the back of the truck. The passenger was identified as Michelle Penney, 53.

As Lutsyk drew near the truck, the driver of the truck attempted to flee. He drove away into a private driveway and then abandoned the truck to flee on foot. The passenger remained in the vehicle. Lutsyk inquired Penney about the driver’s identity. Campbell was later apprehended at some distance from the incident.

Based on his conduct, Campbell faces several charges which have been aggravated due to his other recent violations. These include DUI driving and grand theft in May 2019. Based on his recent conduct, he now faces felony DUI with sentence enhancement for being a persistent violator. The maximum sentence for the charge is life in prison. Campbell has also been charged with driving without privileges and misdemeanor fleeing. His bond has been set at $30,000 with a hearing due on June 24.
