Man Pleads Guilty to Vehicular Manslaughter in DUI Crash

A driver responsible for a DUI crash that resulted in the death of one person and severe injuries to another has now pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter.

The accident took place on the Market Road in May early this year. Robert Murray, 65, was driving a 2014 Dodge Ram at the time. While traveling eastbound on the Market Road, Murray somehow crossed the center line. As he did, his vehicle came into collision with a 2001 Ford Expedition. The other vehicle had a driver and passenger in it at the time. The driver has been identified as Javier Animas Sobrevilla, 56. The injured passenger was Deysi Thomsen, 45, from Boise.

In the wake of the accident, the authorities arrested Murray. He was tested for alcohol and his blood alcohol content (BAC) was twice the legal limit stipulated by Idaho law. Murray was charged with vehicular manslaughter and aggravated DUI.

The injured passenger, Deysi Thomsen, was rushed to the Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center, Boise. It was not clear how severe her injuries were nor is it known how she has recovered so far. Murray, meanwhile, agreed to enter a plea bargain in the charges brought up against him. He had agreed to it. The next hearing of the case is set for January next year when it is expected that the court may pronounce the sentence.

Three different types of vehicular manslaughter punishments exist in Idaho laws. When charged with vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, the guilty person may face up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000. For vehicular manslaughter without gross negligence, the punishments include up to 1 year in jail and a fine of up to $2,000. For vehicular manslaughter with DUI or aggravated DUI, the punishment is up to 15 years in prison and a fine of up to $15,000.
