City Council Imposes Ban on Alcohol on Boise Bike Bars

The Boise City Council has prohibited the consumption of alcohol on the bike bars that are a popular recreation in downtown Boise. The ban on alcohol on Boise bike bars has been imposed through an ordinance unanimously passed by the City Council on Tuesday, January 12.

In addition to banning alcohol on bike bars, the ordinance also prohibits the bike bars from operating after 10:30 p.m. or during the rush hours through the week days. The City Council has also imposed a limitation on the volume of music being played on these bars.

Bike bars are a popular recreation. These are makeshift vehicles where a group of people pedal-power the vehicle where one person directs the vehicle as the driver. Bike bars are particularly enjoyed by young populace who journey on the bike bars in groups to explore the bars, restaurants and other hang-outs of the city.

Although the ban on alcohol on Boise bike bars has been imposed based on reservations from the city residents as well as local business owners, it remains unpopular with the bike bar operators. Some operators believe that this would cut down their business by as much as 40%. Although bike bar operators do not directly sell alcohol, the prohibition may take away much of the charm of the ride.

The origin of the bike bars goes back all the way to 2012 when the first of these vehicles began to operate in the city. The next year, bike bars were allowed to have open alcohol containers on board. However, the City Council soon started receiving complaints about drunk and disorderly behavior, loud noise, and traffic obstructions caused by the bike bars.

Based on these complaints, the City Council started considering imposing regulations on the bike bars back in the summer of 2020. It is only now that the regulations have actually been imposed.
